Does Your AC System Need a Charge?

Posted August 15, 2015

If your air conditioning system isn’t blowing cold air, it might be time to check if it needs a refrigerant recharge. Central air conditioners rely on a gas coolant (commonly known as refrigerant) to cool the air. While refrigerant is designed to last the system’s lifetime, leaks or damage can cause it to run low, affecting your AC's performance.

How to Determine if Your AC System Needs a Recharge

Here are two simple steps to help you identify whether your air conditioning system requires more refrigerant:

1. Check the Thermostat

The first step is to inspect your thermostat to ensure it’s working correctly. Follow these steps:

  • Set the thermostat to 85 degrees and leave it for about 30 minutes.
  • After 30 minutes, lower the setting to 60 degrees and observe the system’s response.

If your AC system kicks on and begins cooling the house effectively, your issue might have been a simple reset or thermostat adjustment. Also, check for any sticking or unresponsive components on the thermostat that could interfere with its functionality.

2. Check the Vents

After resetting the thermostat, allow the AC system to run for some time. Then, place your hand in front of one of the vents:

  • If the air coming out is cold, your system is functioning properly.
  • If the air remains warm or room temperature, it could indicate low refrigerant levels, and your system may need a recharge.

Signs Your AC System Might Need Professional Attention

If you notice any of the following issues, it’s time to call in a professional:

  • Warm air: Persistent warm air from vents even after resetting the thermostat.
  • Frequent cycling: The system turns on and off more often than usual.
  • Higher energy bills: A drop in efficiency can increase energy usage and costs.
  • Ice buildup: Frost or ice forming on the outdoor unit or refrigerant lines.
