How To Fix a Leaky Toilet

Posted March 17, 2015

A leaky or running toilet can be both frustrating and wasteful, potentially increasing your water bill if left unresolved. Fixing a leaky toilet is often a simple process that involves identifying and addressing common issues such as a faulty flapper, damaged ball cock, or misaligned float ball. Follow the steps below to troubleshoot and repair your toilet, or call in the professionals at ABC Plumbing, Sewer, Heating, Cooling & Electrical if you need assistance.

1. Check the Ball Cock

The ball cock is a crucial component of the toilet's fill system. It acts as the on/off valve regulated by the float ball, controlling the flow of water into the tank after each flush. If your toilet is running intermittently or won’t stop filling, the ball cock may be damaged or worn out. Replacing the ball cock can resolve this issue.

2. Inspect the Float Ball

The float ball determines when the ball cock shuts off, ensuring the tank doesn't overfill. If the float ball is set too high, water may overflow into the overflow tube, causing the toilet to run constantly. Adjust the float ball by bending its arm downward or replacing it if it’s damaged.

3. Adjust the Chain

The chain connects the toilet handle to the flapper, lifting it during a flush and allowing it to close afterward. If the chain is too short, it may prevent the flapper from sealing properly. If it’s too long, it can get stuck under the flapper. Adjust the chain length to ensure the flapper closes securely, stopping the water from running.

4. Examine the Overflow Tube

The overflow tube prevents excess water from spilling out of the tank. If your toilet tank is filling continuously, it’s important to check the height of the float ball or the position of the float cup. Lower these components as needed to prevent water from reaching the overflow tube. If the issue persists, replacing the fill valve assembly may be necessary.

5. Test the Flapper

The flapper is a rubber or silicone valve at the bottom of the tank that controls the release of water into the bowl. If it’s cracked, warped, or failing to seal properly, water will leak from the tank into the bowl, causing the toilet to run. Replace the flapper with a new one to fix the leak.

When to Call a Professional

If you’ve tried these steps and your toilet is still leaking or running, the problem may be more complex. Issues like damaged seals, hidden leaks, or plumbing system malfunctions often require the expertise of a licensed plumber.
