Garbage Disposal Stuck? Here's How To Safely Unjam It

Posted October 4, 2016

If your garbage disposal is stuck, the first step is to disconnect the power to ensure your safety before attempting any fixes. Whether it’s jammed by an object or has a mechanical issue, you can follow these simple steps to safely unjam your garbage disposal and get it back to working order.

Step 1: Disconnect the Power

Always prioritize safety when working with a garbage disposal. Disconnect the power by unplugging the unit from the outlet under the sink. If your disposal is hard-wired and doesn’t have a plug, turn off the power at the circuit breaker to ensure the unit is completely de-energized.

Step 2: Use an Allen Wrench to Free the Impeller

Most modern garbage disposals have a flywheel lug at the bottom of the unit for manual unjamming. Here’s how to use it:

  • Locate the hex-shaped hole at the bottom of the disposal unit.
  • Insert an Allen wrench into the hole.
  • Turn the wrench counterclockwise, then clockwise to manually rotate the motor shaft.
  • Repeat this process until the impeller spins freely and the jam is cleared.

Avoid using excessive force or sharp objects, as these can damage the disposal.

Step 3: Press the Reset Button

Once the jam is cleared, restore power to the unit and check if it operates correctly. If the disposal still doesn’t turn on:

  • Ensure the power switch is in the OFF position.
  • Press the red reset button located on the bottom or side of the disposal unit.
  • Turn the cold water on, switch the disposal ON, and check if it’s functioning normally.

  • Run cold water while using the disposal to help flush debris through the system.
  • Clean the disposal regularly by grinding a mixture of ice cubes and lemon slices to remove buildup and odors.
