You’ve heard of pipes bursting because of freezing stagnant water, but did you know that pipes can also crack due to too much stress? While frozen pipes are common to regions with freezing temperatures, excessive water pressure can happen anywhere, regardless of the climate and temperature.
To preserve the integrity of your pipes and avoid a plumbing disaster, check your water pressure and consider installing a water softener.
High water pressure can be very nice when you shower, but it makes your pipe joints, faucets and appliance valves work harder. So how can you find out if your water pressure is set properly? You only need a hose bib gauge, which can be purchased at a hardware store for around $10.
Attach the bib to an outside spigot and open up the line. Normal water pressure ranges from about 40 to 85 psi so if it’s above this range, you’ll want to call on a plumber to reduce the pressure. That’s where ABC comes in.
In addition to checking and correcting the water pressure, it may be wise to install a water softener. Hard water, or water with a high mineral content, can shorten the lifespan of your pipes. Water softeners use sodium or electromagnetic pulses to counteract the minerals in your water and reduce the pressure on your pipes.
