An out-of-balance ceiling fan that wobbles and shakes around is more than just an annoyance; the constant shifting weight can wear out the motor bearings and bushings over time, causing squeaking and eventually a worn-out motor.
If the blades are close to the ceiling, use a yardstick to measure the leading edge of each blade. Numbering each blade with masking tape can help keep track of the blades. Level the leading edges by gently bending it's bracket up or down so all the blades are the same distance at the same location on the ceiling.
If the fan still wobbles, a blade-balancing kit can be purchased from a home center or the fan's manufacturer. Place a clip in the middle of the blade's trailing edge that is out of balance. Check the running fan from eye-level on a ladder to notice how the extra weight changes the balance. Slide the clip out toward the end or back toward the motor and notice if there's a change. Adjust the clip's position on the blade until the fan runs smoothly.
