According to the USGS the Great Lakes region has some of the hardest water in the U.S. The groundwater in Northern Illinois and Chicago contain especially high levels of calcium carbonate, in the range of 181 to 250 milligrams per liter. Interestingly, the levels drop dramatically in Southern Illinois, where the calcium content is in the 0-60 per liter range. Hard water is caused primarily by compounds of calcium and magnesium, and smaller amounts of other metals. For homeowners, hard water can cause many problems that range from unsightly stains on dishes, to difficulty getting laundry clean without excessive levels of detergent. Hard water can also cause scale build-up inside water heaters and other appliances, reducing efficiency and shortening the lifespan of the unit. Do You Need a Water Softener?
If you have experienced the symptoms of hard water above, the first step is to determine the hardness of the water in your home. A water test should be performed to evaluate the levels of calcium and magnesium and determine whether a water softener would be beneficial. Have questions about the water quality in your home?
