In today's modern homes, electronic devices are ubiquitous. However, when these devices are used in close proximity to water sources, they can pose a significant safety risk. If a plugged-in electronic device such as a cellphone, hairdryer, or toaster accidentally falls into a sink or is exposed to excessive moisture, the risk of electrocution becomes alarmingly high.
To mitigate these safety concerns, ground-fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) play a crucial role in your home’s electrical system. In fact, their installation is mandated by law in IL and most other cities and towns across the United States.
ABC Plumbing, Sewer, Heating, Cooling & Electric is committed to ensuring your family's protection from electrocution by installing GFCIs throughout your home. As the premier electricians in Chicagoland, we take pride in surpassing expectations. What Is a GFCI?
The purpose of a GFCI outlet is to trip the electrical circuit when it detects ground faults or current leakage. In other words, the outlet instantly shuts off when exposed to water, thus preventing potentially deadly electric shock. You know you have a GFCI outlet installed if you see “TEST” and “RESET” buttons built into the receptacle.
Where To Install GFCIs in Your Home
If you live in an older home, you might lack GFCI protection. We highly recommend upgrading certain outlets to GFCIs for your family’s safety. This is a simple and inexpensive process, but it still requires the knowledge of a qualified electrician for the best results.
The National Electrical Code requires GFCIs to be installed anywhere an outlet is likely to come in contact with water. These locations include but are not limited to the kitchen, bathrooms, crawlspaces and unfinished basements, laundry and utility rooms, wet bars, garages and sheds, exterior receptacles, etc.
What Is an AFCI?
Arc-fault circuit interrupters (AFCIs) are similar to GFCIs, but they protect against a different threat. Consider that some appliances convert electricity into heat. If they malfunction, these devices may also produce heat where they plug into the wall, a hazardous condition called arcing. An AFCI detects arcing and shuts off power to the outlet before a dangerous arc can start an electrical fire.
AFCI circuit breakers are built into the main electrical service panel to provide protection for individual circuits in your home. The law now requires AFCIs for electrical wiring that reaches bedrooms to prevent sleeping people from being caught off guard by a fire.
Combine GFCI & AFCI Protection
For optimal electrical safety, AFCI circuit breakers can be used in tandem with GFCI outlets. These two technologies work harmoniously to provide the most comprehensive protection on the circuits that require it the most.
By installing both AFCI and GFCI devices, you can have peace of mind knowing that your family is safeguarded against accidental electrical fires and the risk of electrocution.
With the expertise of ABC, your entire home can be seamlessly equipped with GFCI outlets and AFCI circuit breakers. Moreover, our No Surprises Pricing guarantee ensures that you will have a clear understanding of the upgrade costs before any work commences.
